My Personal Recipe & Experience with Cold Pressed Organic Castor Oil as a Skincare Replacement
**FUN FACT: Did you know Castor oil has been used for healing properties for 1000's of years? Ancient Egypt used castor oil as early as 4000 BCE. The Greek Physician Hippocrates (460-370 BCE) Documented the use of castor oil for its "Cleansing" effects and various health conditions including sore eyes and inflammation!
At 54, I’ve become more conscious than ever about what I put on my skin. As I dove deeper into the world of skincare, I was shocked to learn how many products on the market in the U.S. contain chemicals that are banned in other countries due to their toxic nature. This realization sparked a turning point in my approach to self-care, not just in skincare but in home products and the food we buy.
Determined to find a safer, more natural alternative, I began exploring the benefits of castor oil—a powerful ingredient known for its deep moisturizing and healing properties.
But I didn’t stop there. My curiosity led me to research essential oils, each with its unique properties and benefits for the skin.
It took several tweaks but I developed a formula that works wonders for me. The result we call GLOW around here, because it just makes you, well glow. :) My husband even uses it daily on his beard and loves the results!
My personal blend of cold-pressed unrefined castor oil, jojoba oil, and a selection of essential oils designed to nourish, protect, and rejuvenate mature skin.
I’m excited to share this recipe with you, so you too can experience the transformative power of nature in your skincare routine.
I also changed other routines, including diet, 7-Day High Protein Meal Plan and adding in hormone balancing supplements. All can be found here!
Castor oil is rich in ricin oleic acid, a fatty acid; It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties, which protect the skin from infections and provide the following benefits:
Moisturizes: Castor oil is a natural emollient that penetrates deep into the skin, providing intense hydration and locking in moisture. This makes it especially beneficial for dry or flaky skin, leaving it soft, supple, and glowing.
Promotes Hair Growth: While primarily a facial serum, the benefits of castor oil extend to hair health as well. The ricin oleic acid in castor oil helps improve blood circulation, potentially promoting hair growth when applied to the scalp. (Add Rosemary oil for added benefits)
Alleviates Constipation (Bonus Use): Though not related to skincare, it's worth noting that castor oil has been used as a natural laxative for centuries. It can stimulate the bowels, promoting regular bowel movements. (Do your research before ingesting, it is very potent)
Reduces Inflammation: Castor oil contains anti-inflammatory compounds that can help soothe irritated skin and reduce redness and swelling. This makes it ideal for calming sensitive or acne-prone skin. My before and after use picture prove this.
Using cold-pressed unrefined castor oil in your skincare routine is essential for several reasons:
Preservation of Nutrients: The cold-pressing process involves extracting the oil without using heat, which helps preserve the natural nutrients, vitamins, and fatty acids found in castor beans. This ensures that the oil retains its full range of skin-nourishing benefits.
Pure and Natural: Unrefined castor oil hasn’t undergone additional processing, meaning it’s free from chemicals or additives that might strip away its beneficial properties. This purity is crucial for those looking to use clean and organic skincare products.
Effective Hydration: The unrefined oil’s natural fatty acids remain intact, making it more effective at penetrating the skin and providing deep hydration. It also maintains its thick, viscous texture, which helps create a barrier on the skin to lock in moisture.
Castor oil is a super star on it's own, but when combined with essential oils, its benefits are significantly enhanced.
Jojoba Oil: I mix equal parts of Jojoba oil and castor oil, primarily to thin the oil out so it will go onto skin smoothly. Additionally, Jojoba oil is similar to the skin’s natural sebum, making it an excellent moisturizer that balances oil production. It is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores, and it’s rich in antioxidants like vitamin E, which help to repair and protect the skin.
Frankincense (20 drops) : Frankincense is known for its anti-aging properties. It promotes the regeneration of healthy cells and keeps the existing cells and tissues healthy. It also helps in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
Lavender (20 drops): Lavender is soothing and calming, not just for the mind but also for the skin. It helps in reducing redness, blotchy patches, and acne scars. It’s also beneficial for treating minor burns and cuts.
Patchouli (10 drops): Patchouli oil is excellent for dry, cracked skin. It promotes healing and reduces the appearance of scars and stretch marks. It also has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, making it great for irritated skin.
Blue Tansy (20 drops): Blue tansy is known for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s particularly effective for calming irritated or sensitive skin, reducing redness, and treating conditions like eczema.
You will have to play with the ingredients and the amount you use for optimal results. Some of these may irritate some, and are not necessary for the benefits of the other natural oils.
Black Seed Oil: Black seed oil is rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids that help to hydrate the skin and improve its texture. It has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, making it great for treating acne and other skin conditions. It can be used topically or ingested.
Vitamin E Oil: Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from free radical damage. It helps in moisturizing the skin, reducing the appearance of scars and fine lines, and promoting skin healing.
Instructions:
Combine castor oil and jojoba oil in a clean, sterilized glass dropper bottle.
Add the essential oils.
Shake gently to mix.
I use this at night time and also I use it in the morning a couple drops mixed into my foundation or tinted moisturizer for a GLOW.
I also use Beef tallow in the morning as a moisturizer. Be on the lookout for a blog about this amazing product too!
For your convenience, here are some highly recommended sources for the ingredients used in the Glow Organic Serum:
Hydrated, balanced skin: The combination of castor oil, jojoba oil, and black seed oil deeply nourishes the skin, balancing oil production and providing long-lasting moisture.
Reduced signs of aging: Frankincense, patchouli, and vitamin E work together to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, promoting a youthful, glowing complexion.
Calm and soothed skin: Lavender and blue tansy help to soothe irritation and reduce redness, making this serum ideal for sensitive or inflamed skin.
Improved skin texture and tone: Regular use will help even out your skin tone, reduce the appearance of scars, and give your skin a smooth, radiant look.
Consistency is key when using Glow Organic Serum. Here’s a general timeline for what you can expect:
Immediate Effects: After the first few applications, you may notice your skin feels more hydrated and looks slightly more radiant due to the moisturizing properties of the oils.
2-4 Weeks: With regular use, you'll likely start to see a more even skin tone and a reduction in redness or inflammation. Fine lines may begin to soften, and your skin will feel smoother and more balanced.
4-8 Weeks: More significant improvements in skin texture, tone, and elasticity should become apparent. Any acne scars or dark spots may start to fade, and overall, your skin will appear healthier and more youthful.
3 Months and Beyond: Continued use will help maintain these results, with further reduction in fine lines, a glowing complexion, and well-hydrated skin that’s resilient against environmental stressors.
