As we mature, a lot of changes start to happen, am I right? I don't even want to talk about the "power surges" that happen to me randomly - I never thought I would be excited about a personal fan that I can fit into my purse for emergency use; but here we are!
Along with all the other changes, our skin starts to mature and change in our 50's too. Our skin becomes less elastic, more fragile, dry and dull. Aging is due to several factors including the obvious - We ARE Getting Older and so is our skin. But our skin aging is also impacted by external factors, including diet, exercise, stress, and smoking.
I turned 54 this year, and am now much more aware of my skin and how aging is affecting my appearance. I have always been into make up and skincare products, from my days of working for Elizabeth Arden and Estee Lauder, but I did not realize other factors could effect how my skin ages and things that I could do to help feel and look more youthful until I started to research and implement things other than skincare. To follow are some of the things I have found that you can implement now for results!
Getting enough vitamins, antioxidants and protein is really important in keeping skin healthy and youthful. Antioxidants are a strong protectant against free radicals that cause skin damage:
Beta-carotene can help prevent sun damage
Vitamin E can help with free radical damage
Vitamin C stimulates collagen production & help fight wrinkles & age spots
Omega 3's help keep skin thick and moisturized
Protein can help with the elasticity
Collagen - Skin elasticity
Resveratrol - Reduces the effects of Aging
Create a diet rich in Red and Yellow Peppers, Red Grapes, Blueberries, Olive Oil, Fatty Fish, Avocado and Sweet Potatoes. Coffee and Chocolate: YES! Dark Chocolate is full of antioxidants - just make sure it is 70% Cocoa.
I take a few supplements to help my body get the needed antioxidants and collagen:
1 - Collagen Powder Protein with Probiotics by Ancient Nutrition. Multi Collagen Protein has all 5 collagen sources so it helps support Skin and Gut Health, Joint & digestion. It also has a probiotic. I use this every morning in my coffee!
2 - GOLI SuperFoods - This supplement helps with collagen formation, skin radiance and are filled with antioxidants. I have taken several of the GOLI products and Love them! If you use CODE SaltyBeach at check out you can get 10% off.
Taking care of your skin is a priority to me. Since my early 20's when I worked for Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics I have a skincare routine that works for me. I like to keep it simple:
Cleanse - Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Face Wipes are great to remove makeup. I also use all DRMTLGY Essential Cleanser - It is an anti-aging creamy cleanser that is gentle and helps visibly plump the skin.
Treatment- Needle-less Serum by DRMTLGY targets the appearance of fine lines around the mouth, eyes, and forehead, while also hydrating the skin to give a radiant glow!
Eyes - There are a couple of essentials for the eyes. 1st to revive tired eyes I use an eye mask. YOU·OLOGY eye mask by Younique is great for moisturizing and brightening under eye area without leaving a greasy feel behind. Follow up with DRMTLGY eye cream - remember to use your ring finger to apply eye cream so you can avoid tugging or pulling this skin around the eye.
Moisturizer - An important area that is forgotten, but very important as we get older is the neck and décolleté. DRMTLGY has a moisturizer developed specifically for the neck and décolleté. Advanced Neck Cream contains a uniquely blended peptide complex to target the appearance of crepey skin and strengthen the skin barrier to prevent moisture loss. Helps the appearance of hyperpigmentation and age spots.
Of course a day and night cream are important for the face too! I talk about the best day cream in the next tip~ But a night time cream that helps moisturize and calm the skin is key. DRMTLGY Peptide Night Cream Contains an innovative blend of 5 peptides and 3 ceramides & Restores the appearance of skin back to a strong, healthy state.
"Wearing sunscreen is one of the best — and easiest — ways to protect your skin’s appearance and health at any age. Used regularly, sunscreen helps prevent sunburn, skin cancer and premature aging.." – HopkinsMedicine.org
It is so important to wear a daily sunscreen to protect your skin. DRMTLGY has a Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46. Provides sheer tint and offers broad spectrum SPF protection with a beautiful glowy finish. It also provides anti-aging properties by containing a high concentration of Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, and Vitamin E.
Generally, adults should drink between 5 and 8 glasses of water everyday, and even more if needed. Water is also important for skincare. Staying hydrated helps with skin elasticity, pH balance and sagging dull skin. Staying hydrated also helps with moisturizing the skin and flushing toxins.

Finally, getting enough sleep is one of the most important things we can do not only for a healthy body, but for your skin to look young and radiant. Your body boosts blood flow while you sleep, which means you wake to a healthy glow. If you do not get enough sleep you can wake to dull skin and tired eyes.
WebMD has a great article that explains in detail the advantages to a good night sleep and the importance of "beauty rest".
Personally, I find that sleeping in a cooler room, with a light blanket and silk pillowcase helps me sleep better. Sleeping with a silk pillow case offers advantages to skin and hair as well! This one from Bed, Bath and Beyond is my Favorite!
Certainly there are additional skincare routine steps you can add to benefit you and products you can use to enhance and care for your skin too... Exfoliating often, using a daily or weekly mask to help deep clean pores, facial massage to get the blood flowing at the skin surface, the list goes on!
Pamper yourself and your skin will thank you!
